My theory is that Sherlock wanted to come up with a code phrase but instead of just telling John, he just randomly pops up when John isn’t expecting it yells “Vatican Cameos” and whipping a nerf ball at John’s head. Maybe first thing in the morning when John is sleepy, in the shower, when John is out on dates, etc.
